Todaiji or "Great Eastern Temple", founded in the 700's, is by far the most famous attraction in Nara. The largest building of the temple, the "Daibutsuden" is the largest wooden building in the world and it houses the largest bronze statute in the world - an enormous Buddha. The Daibutsuden, unfortunately, is not the original structure - it burned down. The current Daibutsuden was built in 1709.
