This is a head-on shot of the Daibutsu. The size in the picture is very deceptive - it is 48.5' tall even though it doesn't really look it. Keep in mind that 5 people can stand comfortably in its left hand that is placed palm-up, and that the reason the pictures are so poor is that the top of the statue is so far away that camera flashes don't work properly.
