This is probably the most famous figure of Kamakura, the
"Daibutsu", or Great Buddha. It is a hollow bronze statue
(you can go inside too!) that was completed in 1252. It was
originally housed in a large complex, but the original building
was destroyed by a Tsunami in 1495 and it has never been
rebuilt. It is 11.4m tall and wieghs close to 850 tonnes (no
wonder the Tsunami didn't budge it!)
